Our R&D Approach

Our mission is ambitious: We aim to combine our biological insights with our chemistry and formulation capabilities to create medicines that make a meaningful impact on the treatment of disease. We approach R&D with a thoughtful focus on patients' real-world daily challenges. Through this lens, we seek to develop new medications that offer medical benefits, such as improved efficacy, safety and ease-of-use to patients and caregivers.  Ultimately, our goal is to improve health outcomes for patients.

The foundation of our company is based on combining known molecules with our proprietary technologies to enhance the therapeutic potential of existing medications. This strategy has produced two commercial products, RISPERDAL® CONSTA® and VIVITROL®. The technology underlying these two products allows the medication to be gradually released into the body at a controlled rate over a specific time period, alleviating the need for patients to remember to take a daily oral medication. This can be especially important in disease areas such as psychiatric disorders, where medication compliance is closely correlated with improved outcomes.

Today, we are pushing our R&D engine further to advance beyond our technology capabilities. We are now developing medications that leverage our chemical, engineering and biological knowledge, clinical expertise and market insights. As we continue to advance our robust pipeline of extended-release injectable and oral product candidates, we are inspired by the many opportunities we have to make a positive difference in patients’ lives.
